How does one influence a movement? I’ve had the opportunity to learn so far from two South African researchers about the history of the country and how music was used as a tool to fight against the system of apartheid. I am particularly interested in looking more at how music was used in the anti-apartheid movement and any possible connections to the music used for the civil rights movement in the United States.
During this lecture I was introduced to the jazz musician, Abdullah Ibrahim. Ibrahim was born in Cape Town and released the first jazz album by black South Africans in the early 1960s, but soon left the country in exile because of apartheid. He has continued to raise awareness about the racial injustices and inequalities found in his home country through his music, even since returning to South Africa.
